Our Naked Dining Room Window

I have been staring at this boring, naked window for almost a year now while I cook and the occasional times we actually eat at the table. I can’t stand it any longer. I need some good design advice for what kind of covering to put on the window. My problem is the wall is yellow (uh, duh) and the pictures have every color in them! I just don’t want it to start looking like a rainbow in there.

A little background information to get started: the plan for this room is to finish painting the walls yellow and re-stain the table and chairs The top of the table and the chairs will end up being a lighter oak and the bottom of the table will be white. All of my accessories in the kitchen to the left are yellow.

My first thought for the window is to replace to blinds with new ones. All the blinds in our house are a disgusting light pink and look pretty bad. My first thought were bamboo shades, like these found at Bed, Bath & Beyond.

My biggest concern is the shades are brown and my frames are black. I know it is ok to mix-and-match black and brown sometimes, but I’m not sure it would work here. My next thought are just white faux wood blinds from Wal-Mart. Since we are on a budget, real wood is out of the question.

Once I get new blinds up, I know it will look better, but I’m still not sure if it will look complete. This is where I get stuck. I don’t necessarily want full curtains, but I think it needs something to make it feel complete. I am  not a huge fan of valances, but I do like how window cornices look. Not sure if wood is the route I want to take (again, we are on a budget), but I wouldn’t mind learning how to make one if it is affordable.

I really have no idea what to do. That is why I need your help. How did you cover your kitchen/dining room window? What color should I do if I get faux wood blinds or a bamboo shade? Is the wood cornice the direction I need to go? Please help me!!

I like the box; was looking for one myself. You can always hang something behind it later, glue fabric on it, paint it later, you have more options with it later on if you want to change it up.
