Some of you may know already, and some of you may not, but I am 100% obsessed with this room from The Lettered Cottage. Besides the fact that I really REALLY want that quilt, the first time I saw it was in the Pottery Barn catalog and by the time I went to order it they were already sold out, Layla & Kevin have an amazing sense of design and style. From the wood planked walls to the mirrored doors (I so thought mirrored doors were out until I saw their take on them) this room is full of inspiration for me!
So I took the inspiration from their curtains, and ran with it!
This room is the one room in the house without amazing natural light. Obviously… you can tell that by looking at the picture. And having the curtains up doesn’t help the lighting situation at all, but I love it now! It feels more like home and I think it really pulls the room together. We needed curtains for a few reasons:
- I’m pretty sure these windows are original to the house or just very very old… either way, a lovely layer of dirt likes to settle on the windowsill and on the blinds, and it grossed me out that we were laying right underneath it every night. The curtains, in my mind, block that dirt while I’m getting my beauty rest!
- The blinds our landlord has in here have been through a tornado or two and are wavy and don’t provide much privacy. The curtains block those ugly blinds and now our neighbors can’t see into our room when they get out of their car.
- This room didn’t feel comfortable until I hung the curtains and now it is finally starting to feel like home (for now at least)!
Here are a few more (really dark, really bad) pictures. I’m just telling myself that the lighting in the room is “romantic” and not just sucky.
View from the hallway.
I’m hoping that in our next house, we can use the same curtains and open them up when we aren’t sleeping. But now, for those suckers stay pulled together to keep the dirt on the window side and not the side where we lay our heads!
Here are some close up shots.
I looked for curtains FOREVER! In our old house, I never put anything up because I couldn’t find anything that I just loved. Solid color panels seemed boring, and I couldn’t find any patterns that I felt mixed with the stripes well. When I saw how Layla & Kevin layered their curtains, I fell in love immediately. I bought the same IKEA LENDA curtains as they have… they are a great price (2 panels for $30) and longer than regular curtains! I didn’t want to hem them because in our next house, we may adjust how high we hang them, so I am keeping the tabs on top for how. I also didn’t want to spend $40 on a double curtain rod, so I cheated and just hung another small rod below the one we had up there before. I’m so tricky aren’t I?
Where do you guys find your inspiration? While the beach-cottage-style isn’t really mine or Ryan’s style, I love finding inspiration in the details at The Lettered Cottage!

Your curtains look amazing! And you are sneaky … I didn’t even realize there was two separate rods. Good job using what you already have
